KRFCU13's V Barker & Butts
By Stewart Holford
A complete squad performance
After a very mediocre ( and i'm being generous) warm up we settled in to play 3 x 20min sections of rugby. Here's how it played out:
BB kick off, Kettering secure the ball & work it up the pitch, we go through some good phases & recycling of the ball. Ball out to Oran on the wing & he's in for a try. Good start from the boys. As the game settles there really is nothing between the teams. BB run some good attacking lines, Kettering defend well. Ball changes sides numerous times. A good test for both teams. It's a Kettering scrum in our half, Ball out to Oran who runs up the wing, he's tackled down & another scrum. BB on the attack now. Kettering strong in defence & we turn the attack on BB. More phase play & plenty of work for the forwards at the breakdowns. Ball out to Christian who runs up the wing to score. BB on the attack now & making their way down to our try line, good feet & a superb dummy & finish from them, try BB. BB kick from the restart, Cyrus secures the ball & is tackled down, Shea strong in the ruck & ball out to Freddie who kicks a high ball against the wind, Fraser takes the ball in the air & runs all the way to their try line, try Fraser. A superb piece of skill from the boys. BB attacking again but Shea is dominating the BB attack, holding players and turning the ball over. End of the first 20.
Kettering kicking off with the wind & ball goes over the dead ball line so it's back for a scrum on the half way. Tom H disrupting the BB scrum half at the scrum, knock on by BB & it's kettering scrum. Ball out to Ben off the back of the scrum, some fantastic footwork from him & he's in for a score, try Ben. Another scrum & ball out to Ben again ( playing 10) he sees space & kicks the ball into it. Kettering charging down the Pitch & pressuring BB. Couple of phases of play by Kettering & ball out to Ben who goes over for the score, try Ben. BB on the attack now but a few handing errors by them is stopping them finishing anything off. Scum on the half way, Kettering put in. Kettering working down the pitch, ball changing sides & it's a scrum in BB's half. Alex at scrum half now, ball out to Ben & he runs it in, try Ben. BB kick from the restart, Charlie catches it & runs through BB's defence & he's over, try Charlie. BB on the attack again, they're 2 metres out & Kettering are defending with all their might, holding players up & not giving in, BB have to go through multiple phases, unfortunately we are giving penalties away & inevitably BB score a well deserved try. Great effort in defence by Kettering though. End of second section.
Kettering attacking well, working the ball up the pitch. 5m out from the BB try line, Chaos ball called off the breakdown with Shea latching on to another forward, picks up the ball with one hand and charges through the defence, great to see this training move executed so well in a game. Kettering mixing up the plays & making it really hard for BB. Nothing in between the two teams, 10 mins of back and forth play. Kettering working up the pitch, it's a ruck & kettering drawing in BB & Freddie spots them being very narrow at the breakdown, pulls the ball out wide, Charlie on the ball & he's over, try Charlie. BB on the attack but Fraser goes for the intercept & gets it out to christian but BB scramble a defence & Kettering give away a penalty on the 22. Another breakdown, ball out to Freddie and Sam runs on to it & he's over, try Sam. Sam working hard in defence after the restart, tackles & he's up for the steal, BB have no one in support, Sam charging up the pitch again. Will L/W back with us after his injury, it's like he's never been away, dominating the breakdowns. Last play of game & Kettering getting it out to Christian who powers up the wing for a try, try Christian. End of third section.
Tries: Oran 1, Christian2, Fraser 1, Ben 3, Charlie 2 & Sam 1
Barker & Butts were a really tough opposition, the only difference being their handling errors & not finishing their opportunities. Kettering played one of their most complete squad performances this season. The boys only missed a few tackles but other than that it was a great display of fire & skill. The forwards have really worked hard over the last few weeks & i could name check them all. Max, Cyrus, Clarke, Toby, Charlie, Sam, Alfie, Ewan to name but a few really dominating today. Shea brought a confidence & dogged determination that seemed to lift the players around him.The forwards were strong & pulled in the BB defence which created space for the backs. Freddie & Ben ran the back lines with great vision & created superb oppertunities for others to exploit, throw in a bit of creativity & the complete squad performance came together. Well done boys, you did your mothers proud on Mothers day.
