Pinley & Barkers Butts V KRFC U13's
By Stewart Holford
Great performances on the road
Our fixture was to be Pinley only but Barkers Butts fixture had been cancelled & they had asked if they could join in on the mornings Rugby. We had agreed & we knew this would push our squad to the limit. We can field two sides but only just with no subs today. We talked to the squad before the games & explained that some players would have to play out of their regular positions but asked that they dig deep & give everything to the team. They didn't disappoint.
Game 1: Pinley 10 - 55 Kettering
We elect to kick, we pressure Pinley & secure the ball & Leo runs in the first try. We kick off again & Tom R wraps up the ball carrier & secures it, out to Toby & it's a try. Some great rucking by Bryce, we secure the ball, out to Alex for a try. Pinley kick off & they are very tough at the breakdown, they secure & ball out to their giant 3 who runs hard & straight, try to Pinley. Leo makes a great break & is sure to be in but a try saving tackle from Pinley. Pinley defend on their try line, great rucking from them but somehow Milo secures the ball & scores. Pinley making us work hard and Ioan getting stuck into the ruck with great technique, a real improvement. Tom R making a great run, Pinley defending really well . Kettering scrum, ball out to Ioan who runs in a great try. Ball going through the hands really well & it's out to Austin who scores. We get put under pressure in our own half & kick the ball out. Pinley with a good pick up & lightening run to score. Will L/W with a great tackle on the giant 3, good technique. Good run from Luca who scores, first try for the team. Kettering secure again & ball through hands to Milo for a try. Start of the second half & Pinley rucking really hard but Tom R is ferocious in the ruck. Fantastic play from Alex, wraps the player up, brings him to ground & jackals the ball, just brilliant. We secure the ball at the breakdown, Ioan with a show & go & ball out to Milo to score. Archie with a tap & go penalty, out to Alex who scores. More good passing, out to Milo who scores. Luca with a great run again, good play from him today. Pinley are working hard now & giving it all they've got, they are better than the score than says but it's time up here at Wyken Croft. Some great team play out there today, we couldn't of asked more of the boys, a real team effort with some huge improvement at the breakdown.
Tries: Leo 1, Toby 1, Alex 2, Milo 4, Ioan 1, Austin 1, Luca 1.

Game 2: Barkers Butts 5 - 50 Kettering
Great interplay between Freddie and oran results in the first try for the blues. Tight pitches need good ball control today due to lack of space. Good pressure from Barkers Butts, but broken up by the blues leading to strong running from Will and Sam.Good passage of play from Kettering with ball going through plenty of hands. Unfortunately, a little lack of composure leads to an attempted miss pass, which takes out 3 Kettering players and results in a knock on. Good idea though from the backs. Game is even in the first few minutes. From a resulting penalty for a technical offence, Barkers Butt make good progress and go over for their 1st try. Great to see plenty of ball movement across the field from Kettering, however the final pass appears to be a hurried throw over the shoulder , rather than taking the ball into the contact for recycling or looking for the right man to pass to.Barkers Butts scrum was very strong, so necessity for quick ball, which the Blues seemed to understand quickly. Good work from forwards in terms of rucking and also counter rucking. Need to keep our hands out of the ruck though and get lower body positions to drive opposition away from the Ball, rather than protect it. Would allow the scrum half quicker access.
Sustained pressure from the Blues with good centre play from Ben, before going into Shea for a strong run and a try by Sam with excellent support play. 2-1.Oran takes ball into contact and offloads to Ben, who scores in the centre. Oran’s work pulled in 4 BB, creating the space for Ben. 3-1.Will Homer with good handling in the middle today, whilst Dan and Shea also getting stuck in. Charlie is supporting well with some strong aggressive running, whilst Shea and Max are doing a lot of the unnoticed hard forwards work. Charlie strong running creates space as 4 players fall off him, supported well by Will. Whilst we lose the ball, we go back for a penalty, which leads to a try for Sam. 4-1.More great play from the backs leads to a run from Ben, with a pass out of the back of his hand, to Oran who goes over in the corner 5-1.Blues really happy to play the ball through the hands, going onto Charlie who runs through the BB defence with players falling off him like a snowplough. From the resulting carnage, BB secure the ball but a loose pass is intercepted by Will who goes over to score 6-1.Great counter rucking from the blues over a very fired up BB. Ball out to Oran who makes a great run and although on the receiving end of a strong tackle, stands up well to offload, ball being recycled and then back to Freddie to go over again 7-1.Counter rucking is really great – Freddie benefits from the forwards hard work, off to ben, who then gets the ball onto Dan who goes over and its 8-1.Following on from a BB scrum, the ball goes loose and Christian shows his round ball football skills to kick through twice and score and make it 9-1.Biggest lad from BB picks the ball up and runs straight at Kettering – smallest bloke on the pitch, Thomas, clearly listens to the coaches at half time and goes for the legs, bringing him down. Oran through for another try .
Great forward play just need to work on our body positioning and intensity to drive opposition away. Invention aplenty from the Backs but we just need to make sure the passing goes to hand. We gave away a few technical penalties today, hands in the ruck, side entry. Something to work on in training.
Tries: Freddie 2, Sam 2, Ben 1, Oran 2, Will 1, Dan 1, Christian 1.
Barkers Butts were a good physical challenge for the team today, the boys stood up well, playing as a team won the day.

In summery for us to put out 2 full teams with no subs & perform the way they did is no mean feat. Some exceptional play out there today with some great improvements from individuals. What is setting us apart is the team play & the belief the players have in each other. I went over to the the huddle at half time & the boys were working out what they needed to do to improve, no need for intervention by coaches today. Do not underestimate how hard the boys worked for this today. I for one am extremely proud of their performance.
