Vets start league campaign with storming win in double quick time
By Martin Reece
A very strong Vets squad travelled to St Ives for the first of their league games and started as they mean to go on.
With severe competition for places in the squad in the week leading up to this game and all players playing for their places next time everyone felt they were under severe scrutiny. But the pre match nerves were channelled into producing a barn-storming performance from everyone.
St Ives found it tough going from the start as they had to defend for most of the time and when they did get the ball, they found a robust and resilient defence in place. Strong talking from a number of Kettering players took its toll and Kettering soon regained possession.
With such a wealth of talent in the Kettering ranks, the ball was run at virtually every opportunity and this continued to test the St Ives team to the maximum. Even with their committed and dedicated defence, it was only a matter of time before tries were scored. Scorers included Steve Freeman, Ned Stephen Kelly plus , Eddie Edwards "from at least 100 yards out", Luca Rodger, and Steve Fordham.
With the lightning bolts crashing around us, the game was called to an early end.
Whilst there were plenty of exceptional performances all over the park, by general consensus, Mike Watson bagged the man of the match award.
